We like to go out on a limb sometimes here at Peggs & son. We live and breathe what we do in our little store, and we love what we do- that is bringing together interesting selections of clothing for the discerning modern man. But its not all about buying safe stylish pieces or chasing the buck. Sometimes you have to get a little murky and say 'that is a killer piece- will there be someone out there who will appreciate it? what the hell, lets order it anyway'. And that is why you will be hard pushed to find this coat anywhere else in the U.K.
Handmade in England from a multi stripe wool 'sioux' blanket, the DB Campaign coat from Heritage Research is one of the gems lurking on the rails at Peggs & son this Winter. Based on the coat issued to U.S Navy sailors during the Mexican- American war of the 1840's it features reinforced shoulder panels (extra comfort for your rucksack), large patch pockets (perfect for stowing gloves, hats or notebooks), heavy shawl collar (pop that bad boy up and enjoy protection from the elements) and adjustable cuffs (we like to cinch ours in when the weather gets cold).
Likewise, you will be hard pushed to find one of A.R.N Mercantile's fine Oxford shirts, well, anywhere outside of Japan. A.R.N is another of our favourite firms because they really know what they are doing.
The shirt is constructed from an organic dobby fabric- a traditional English hunting fabric now only found to be produced in Japan. It is woven on a '28' shirting loom as opposed to the usual '32' hard loom. The fabric has a tonal quality (one side darker than the other) due to the left hand looming process.
The button down collar is slightly lifted by a higher button position. This is a historical reference to the period in the 1930's of the breaking down in distinctions between white collar and blue collar workers. During this time there was a move away from the use of stiff, detachable collars and the introduction of one piece (attached) collars- the Oxford shirting collar being a soft collar for the working environment.
The sander- cinch chino by Levi's Made & Crafted has quickly established itself as a favourite trouser shape on the shopfloor at Peggs & son. It is a selvedge edge fabric which is always a good start whenever a turn up is involved and the shape (a contemporised version of an 1878 pantaloon) is a winner- relaxed with a defined taper that elongates the leg and with great detailing like the frog mouth pockets, button fly and cinch-back. Produced in Italy it is also available in a navy selvedge chino fabric and a raw selvedge denim (as pictured below).
The footwear is courtesy of Red Wings shoes U.S.A. The Beckman chukka boot is named after the founder of the firm, Mr Charles Beckman. Again, taking inspiration from the dress of a mid- Century working man, it is a boot that is rugged enough to graft in yet has the ability to be polished, shined and worn in a more genteel environment.
Made in the U.S.A from Featherstone leather produced at the S.B. Tannery in Featherstone MN, the boot is Goodyear welted, leather lined and has leather soles with a Vibram rubber commando tread. These guys will see you through the harshest of Winters in (style and) comfort.
