SUMMER STYLE: PASTEL SHADES

SUMEMR STYLE: PASTEL SHADES at Peggs & son.

Summer trends come and summer trends go, but one that sticks around season after season is pastel shades. Easy to wear and providing a much welcome alternative to dark winter hues, we’re reaching for light blues, washed pinks and faded violets to add a touch of colour to our wardrobe. To celebrate the mercurial arrival of the sun, we took some of our top pastel picks down to Hove’s famous beach huts for a washed out editorial.

A particular standout piece for us this season has to be the Osvald Check Shirt from masters of Danish minimalism, Norse Projects. Cut from 100% brushed cotton, it comes in a subtle light blue check pattern throughout. Despite formal features such as the button down collar and open chest pocket it still manages to retain a relaxed feel, a style that Norse have made their own over the years. Sticking with the check, we’re also big fans of the 19th Century BD Shirt from New York’s Engineered Garments. Cut in the Garment District of downtown Manhattan, its subdued selection of colours make the perfect match for a summer’s day.

The humble tee is perhaps the most quintessential summer item. In store we have a strong selection from the likes Folk and visvim, but some of the pastel hued highlights are from British labels YMC and MHL by Margaret Howell. Both the Wild Ones and Matelot offer a great alternative to dominating colours such as navy and black and work great with a range of outfits. For something a bit bolder, try the Box L/S Tee from Our Legacy that comes in a lilac colourway.

As summer can be unpredictable, especially on the Brighton seafront, it’s always wise to bring a couple of layers in case the weather turns. A standout piece for us is the Brody Jacket from CMMN. Based around a Type III, the Swedish label have reinterpreted the workwear classic by kitting it out in pink and giving the body a boxier feel.

SPRING LAYERS WITH JAKE FROM OVERDILUTED

SPRING LAYERS WITH JAKE FROM OVERDILUTED

SPRING LAYERS WITH JAKE FROM OVERDILUTED

We teamed up with our good friend and local menswear blogger Jake Story from Overdiluted to run through some of his favourite spring styles we have here in store. Taking to the streets of Brighton’s Seven Dials area, he chose an array of outfits all with the ever changing weather conditions in mind. Take a look below at his picks and see what he had to say about them:

“Initially, there might not seem much difference between my spring style and what I might wear in the winter – apart from the shorts, of course – but a lot of it comes down to the weight of materials. Spring is about as unpredictable as it comes, so it’s important that pieces are lightweight and layered. It’s all about adding up and taking away to keep yourself comfortable, which in my eyes is the art to perfecting your spring wardrobe.

You’ll need weatherproof jackets one day and shorts the next, which is why the Universal Works Bakers Jacket is a great piece: thin enough for a jumper or hoodie underneath and thick enough to do you some favours when things get a little chilly. Equally, both the YMC Deja Vu Trousers and visvim High Water Chinos aren’t as heavy as you might need for the colder months, which means you can comfortably get away with them on warmer days, despite the fact they’re full length. My favourite piece we shot has to be the Engineered Garments Parka in a nice and light poplin cotton that’s ace for the ever-changing conditions.”

SUMMER HOLIDAY: ARTIST RESIDENCE HOTEL

Untitled-2

There’s no summer holiday quite like a British holiday. With the grey skies and cold months all but a distant memory, it’s finally that time of year to crack out the shorts and sandals, drink copious amounts of cold beer and burn some food on the barbecue. Fear not, here in store we have all the clothing you need to accompany these activities.

Over on our Inspirations page we’ve created our holiday planning guides, where you will find our curated selection of packing essentials for all types of vacations. Whether you’re planning a short city break, a heavy festival weekend or a family trip to the beach, we have it all covered. You will find a fine selection of essentials, from the luxury luggage of Globe-Trotter to the quality sunglasses from Sun Buddies.

We always think that to make the most of your holiday, you want the clothing you bring to be both comfortable and versatile. Our featured selection includes tried and tested pieces from Norse Projects, A.P.C., Our Legacy, Sunspel, Officine Generale and Universal Works. Keeping it simple with grooming products, we’ve delved into our range from the likes of Baxter of California, Marvis, Laboratory Perfume and Barbasol.

To get us in the mood, we headed over to the Artist Residence, a small, boutique hotel located just off the seafront in the historic Regency Square. With sea views and an eclectic aesthetic, it is the perfect place to stay for a weekend away here in Brighton. See below for our experience when we headed there earlier this month.

SCANDINAVIAN STYLE AT PEGGS & SON

Scandinavian Style at Peggs & son.

Scandinavia has long been a centre for high quality, modern design. From architecture to art, furniture to textiles, this small area of Northern Europe punches well above its weight in the style stakes. We here at Peggs & son are big fans of the clothing from this region which is exemplified by flattering cuts and use of premium materials. Some of our favourite brands such as Norse Projects, Soulland, Our Legacy and Uniforms For The Dedicated all hail from the region, each with their own unique take on contemporary men’s clothing. We thought we would put a shoot together focusing on some key pieces of the season for your browsing pleasure. So carry on reading below for the latest in Scandinavian style at Peggs & son.

With restaurants such as Noma and Amass, a vibrant art scene and picturesque city centre, Denmark’s Copenhagen is cultural and creative hub. Norse Projects, a brand who we have been stocking for many years, also happen to call it their home. Norse Projects have a clean, almost utilitarian approach to creating clothing. It is highly functional, well made, but with a distinct Scandinavian feel. Highlights include their winter accessories such as the Sigurd Scarf that has been made from an Italian virgin wool blend.

We’re big fans of denim here at Peggs & son and for a unique and modern take on the humble jean, you can’t do much better than Sweden’s Nudie. We have a big range of styles here in store to cater for all tastes. Slim and straight, regular and tapered, washed or raw, we have you covered. All Nudie jeans are made from organic cotton and feature the instantly recognisable back pocket arcuate stitching.

If there’s one thing that us British and the Scandinavian have in common, it’s the rain. Fortunately Swedish label Stutterheim have found a stylish way to combat the elements in the form of their Stockholm raincoat. Not made from fancy fabrics developed in a laboratory, instead founder Alexander Stutterheim looked to his grandfather’s wardrobe for inspiration. Cut from waxed cotton and featuring taped seams, the Stockholm is based around a classic fisherman’s style. Completely waterproof, it features a large adjustable hood, rivets on the slanted hip pockets and comes in a variety of different colourways.

Finally in this Scandinavian special we look at the clothing from Soulland. Head designer Silas Adler takes in a range of influences when creating each new collection, but the clothing remains simple and understated in classic Scandinavian fashion. Wardrobe essentials are the brand’s main focus with contemporary updates on pieces such as long sleeve tees, hooded tops and turtle necks. Shown is the Miller Shirt, a multi patterned number that exudes Nordic cool.

START OF THE NEW SEASON

Peggs & son new season

The world of fashion waits for no man. The wheels keep turning and with the start of the new year comes the start of the new season. Now, we know the idea of summer shirts and shorts seems utterly ridiculous in this bitterly cold January we are having, but don’t worry, many designers and labels have thought about this tricky transition period and produced some exceptional clothing that bridges the gap between the cold of winter and the relative warmness of spring.

The past couple of days have been particularly busy here at Peggs & son. As well as our winter SALE (it’s still going strong, check it out) we have had loads of great new stock through the door. Old favourites Our Legacy are back with their trademark shirting and Burlington have gifted us with a whole load of new styles and colourways. However, what has got us most excited is the arrival of a brand new label, to us at least anyway. We are happy to announce the arrival of Nike to the store. With regular drops several times a year, we will be stocking classic styles as well as some more limited edition trainers. So with the new year well and truly under way, come and take a look at what the new season has to offer…

STYLE & LITERATURE BUTTON UP

Image from selectism.com

Image from selectism.com

Sartorial style and literature have always made for a good relationship; from the salubrious elegance and decadence of Jay in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s seminal classic The Great Gatsby to the straight-leg, high rolled denim and plain white tees favoured by Dean Moriarty in the Kerouac epic On The Road, the clothes on the characters backs are pivotal to the words which accompany the narrative.

The bond between books and fashion has just become a little tighter thanks to Penguin and the editors of men’s fashion magazine Fantastic Man who have joined forces to produce Buttoned Up, a compact 112-page homage to the recent trend of hip East End inhabitants and their fully fastened shirts.

Part of the recent series dedicated to 125 years of the London Underground, this great little read combines essays, interviews and photos of well-attired gents in their Sunday best, drawn together in the name of contemporary sartorial elegance to give us the opportunity to bring our wardrobe into the modern world while maintaining the tact and decorum associated with any self-discerning gent.

new collections at peggs & son (2)

New stock is coming in thick and fast. As well as shoes from Grenson, socks from Burlington and wallets from Il Bussetto, we have new collections in from Our Legacy, Woolrich, Levi’s Vintage Clothing and Topo Designs. Don’t worry, it’s not all woollen jackets and scarves, there are lighter pieces such as tees, shirts and blazers to make that transition into autumn slightly more bearable.

To give you a little taste of what’s in store and online we have compiled a few looks using some of our favourite pieces. As usual we really like the suiting from Our Legacy and the casual Americana of Levi’s Vintage Clothing and Woolrich. Topo Designs are a new brand to us here at Peggs & son but we love their functional approach to bags. The looks feature plenty of textured fabrics, darker colours and interesting layering possibilities. Most importantly they can withstand the unpredictable British weather we have to endure at this time of the year.

Our Legacy aw13 at Peggs & son

Our Legacy

The guys from Sweden continue to do what they do best: clean, simple styles that have a timeless feel to them. On show here is the amazing three button rolling blazer. Although now seems like the worst time to talk about items made from wool, in a few weeks time this stunning blazer will come into its own. It is paired with the lively Jacquard Dots tee which utilises pattern to great effect. The rest of the collection features printed shirts, chunky sweats, versatile coats and formal trousers. Pop by the shop to see the garments in the flesh.

LVC aw13 at Peggs & son

LVC

The guys over at the LVC department of Levi’s like to look back through their illustrious archives and recreate classic garments. This results in some stunning vintage pieces such as this 1960s Striped Tee. Inspired by Motown’s musical revolution and constructed using 100% Portuguese cotton, the tee is soft to the touch and comes in an orange, black and white colourway. The horizontal striped pattern is reminiscent of a musical score, a nod to its heritage. The rest of the collection features classic sportswear sweats and some amazing 501’s from various periods that stay true to the original designs.

Topo Designs aw13 at Peggs & son

Topo Designs

Topo bags are created by people who live and breathe the great outdoors. Coming from the Rocky Mountains in the west of the USA, the label was born out of the need for rugged and robust gear. This part of America is famed for its wilderness and Topo Designs bags utilise this amazing landscape for inspiration and the bags they create are designed for people who enjoy outdoor pursuits such as fishing, skiing, hiking, climbing, biking and just plain old travelling. The bags are simple, beautiful and, most importantly, functional. Because the bags are created by genuine enthusiasts they are to the highest specifications.

woolrich aw13 at Peggs & son

Woolrich

Woolrich are one of the oldest clothing labels in America and have been producing workwear for well over 180 years. Their dedication to creating quality clothing is clear to see in their new collection which features super soft but light weight sweaters made from premium Geelong wool alongside lightweight printed shirts. It is, however, the Felted jacket in camo that has got us all hot and bothered here at Peggs & son. We love the camo print and fit which is perfect for remaining undetected yet smart in the great outdoors.

HOLIDAY SEASON

RIVIERA

Ah, the summer months: lying by turquoise blue seas, sunning yourself under cloudless skies, sipping on some exotic beverage that looks like it was concocted in some far off land. It all sounds so idyllic… until it’s ruined by some beast of a fella’ yelling at his kids while marauding about – like the Full Metal Jacket drill sergeant – in some obscene, ill-fitting attire splayed with (un)witty slogans, shorts that only a surfer should wear and cumbersome shoes that look like hand-me-downs from a distant relative.

It never fails to amaze us here at Peggs & son just how wrong some men get their holiday attire when really it’s all about keeping it clean and simple. A good Sunspel, Oliver Spencer or Armor Lux t-shirt, a pair of Levis Made & Crafted, or Woolrich tailored shorts and a comfortable pair of Mr. Hare loafers, Eastland Deck Shoes or Our Legacy pumps and you’re set to at least look like you could be mixing with the Rat Pack on the French Riviera.

COLOUR

COLOUR

So often, when men see a bit of colour they run a mile. Bright coloured attire veers so far from the sartorial classicism of navy and the monochrome subtleties of black and white, we, the male species, simply cannot comprehend how one could possibly eschew these colours into our everyday wears.

And yet colour is essential not only to our summer garb, but our wardrobe as a whole. Colour need not be looked upon as some young upstart meant only for troublesome teens and those who refuse to grow up (no names mentioned, uh-hum, our very own Robbie & Marcus.) In fact colour is the natural equilibrium to the essential, some would say more traditional hues of the aforementioned navy’s et al.

No one expects any self-respecting man to be drenched head-to-toe in some garish myriad of colours but team up the Norse Tristan Sweat with a good pair of Edwin’s, pull on the Lightning Bolt tee with the Our Legacy relaxed trouser or the Soulland Hansen shorts with the A.P.C Rue Royal tee and the Gourmet sneaks and voila, you’ll soon realise that navy isn’t the only colour us men can get away with.
