Much like Universal Works, the offerings from Margaret Howell this season are fully rooted in simple and elegant items of British workwear. We think this approach works really well as all the formal details are present, such as notched lapels and a button fastened front, just in a more relaxed and comfortable package. Margaret has given her Work blazer a summer makeover and it is has been constructed from soft and light cotton. What we think works best though is the wonderful shape which has an unstructured cut but the fit still retains an air of smartness.
Plenty of workwear details are present such as the slim lapel, the two button fastening, the robust construction and pocket detailing on the left breast. Best of all, the jacket can easily be washed thanks to the lack of lining. This is a low maintenance jacket for people who just want to throw on a comfortable, good looking blazer.
With summer well on the way, the season of BBQs, weddings and other social events begin. With a party on a sunny Brighton rooftop or down the beach, you can get away with a pair of jeans and a relaxed t-shirt. But for those occasions when the attire required needs to be a little more formal, a suit jacket and trousers paired with a shirt is the only way forward. You definately don’t want to be that guy at a wedding who rocks up in a pair of shorts and deck shoes, but neither do you want to be sweltering under a thick three-piece suit in the midday heat of a balmy July afternoon.
However, there is a compromise – lightweight, relaxed suits that offer the wearer protection from the sun whilst still retaining a smarter feel. So for the first part in our series that takes a closer look at summer suiting, we showcase what the new collection from Universal Works has to offer for the man who wants to remain as casual as possible in formal situations.
The style of Universal Works is firmly rooted in classic British workwear and their suiting reflects this with a relaxed feel and unstructured shapes. This lends itself perfectly to the hotter weather with slightly looser fits and thinner materials that are more than acceptable in the height of summer. Combine this with light shades such as grey and blue, informal details such as multiple pockets and Universal Works’ unique modern twist and you’ll be looking calm and collected when you’re sipping on a gin and tonic in the afternoon sun.
For one last encore, APC have again teamed up with American workwear label Carhartt for a collaboration that mixes the French brands minimal aesthetic with something a bit more rugged. The collection is full of solid staples such as simple tees, hardwearing shirts, warm beanies, mixed up watches and tough coats.
The colour palette reflects the autumnal season with a muted selection of greys, deep blues and blacks combining with the unassuming branding to create items that, although slightly stark in appearance, have the playful nature of both brands at heart. A great example of this would be the Odette watch, which has used the Jimi Hendrix song, “If Six Was Nine” as inspiration to create a timepiece like no other.
As this is the last ever installment of this capsule collection, there is a lot of nostalgia in the choice of products. The classic beanie is left unaltered and the Gabrielle jacket, so often given the APC treatment, comes in perhaps its best guise yet, a clean, single coloured corduroy number in Anthracite grey. We will miss it when it’s gone, but for the time being we can enjoy one collab that really brings the best out of both brands involved. Photos: bythelevel.com

Last season saw the first collaboration between Adam Kimmel, an acclaimed New York based fashion designer, and Carhartt, the nations leading manufacture of premium work wear.
For Spring/ Summer ’12 they have collaborated again with another very strong collection of reworked classic Carhartt pieces, tailored into slimmer cuts with more refined fabrics, creating a very stylish but rugged feel. The slimmed-down sportswear approach provides a functional yet stylish take on iconic American classics.
We have selected 5 styles from the capsule collection which we feel will compliment the British summer and are available to purchase online here.
