Tank jacket was originally developed to be part of three-piece winter suits for the Armoured Forces of the U.S. Army, hence the jacket's nickname that would make it famous. Tanker Jacket. The jacket featured a water-repellent, wind-proof cotton twill shell, 26 oz. heavy, blanket wool lining and double-pleated bi-swing action construction.

711th Bombardment Squadron, established in April 1943, engaged in duty of over the U.S. and European Theatre of Operations. The patch attached to the jacket was locally made at that time in Europe.
