EVISU was founded in Osaka, Japan in 1991 by Hidehiko Yamane, an avid jeans collector and trained tailor, and named after the Japanese god of prosperity Ebisu. Originally known as EVIS Jeans, initially only around 14 pairs of jeans were made with obsessive detail and quality as homage to the original 1944 Levis 501xx, whose painted arcuate was the inspiration for Yamane's now famous hand painted logo.

This attention to detail resulted in EVISU jeans becoming some of the most coveted denim items in the world, capturing the imagination of the heritage detail-obsessed Japanese style crowd and spurring a revival of interest in vintage style denim.
