Modern Tailoring

We don’t do formal tailoring here at Peggs & son, but that doesn’t mean you can’t dress with a smarter edge. We love unstructured jackets and relaxed trousers, and almost everything we choose has its roots in workwear rather than Savile Row. As we're a casual store at heart, we want to be able to pick up a jacket or a pair of trousers without feeling you’re off to a wedding, the trading floor, or a country estate.

The Universal Works Two Button Jacket has been a favourite for years, balancing utility with a formal edge. This season it comes in three versions, all cut from Italian tweed. This fabric isn't the heavy, scratchy stuff from the Outer Hebrides; it is smooth and soft to the touch, made from a lighter blend of cotton, wool, and poly. Service Works go further towards workwear with their Server Suit Jackets, which bring the same rugged, chef-inspired construction as the rest of their range, but in a relaxed three-button cut. They come in organic cotton twill or soft corduroy, both with notched lapels and internal and external pockets.

Shirting is where we like to think we really excel. Beams Plus craft perhaps the quintessential Oxford, made in Japan with exacting Ivy League detailing. But Universal Works, Annarr, Folk and Service Works all offer strong options for the season ahead.

For trousers, Universal Works again deliver. The Pleated Track Pant is our top pick, loose through the thigh, pleated detailing, with a shallow taper to the hem. Some match the Two Button Jacket in the Italian tweed for a full suit, while others come in cotton twill or brushed moleskin.

Finish it all off with penny loafers from G.H. Bass or Sebago, or if that isn't your style something from Northamptonshire's Sanders who offer a modern take on classic silhouettes. You also cannot beat the French made footwear from Paraboot, the Michael being a stone cold classic. Clarks also offer up their iconic Wallabee with a Gore-Tex lining for wet winter days.
